AECOM’s Building Engineering practice line is currently expanding through the region and we are seeking an experienced Senior Fire Protection Engineer to join our Design team. The Senior Engineer will work as part of the Mechanical Design Engineering team within our Building Engineering division, covering the UAE & Oman. The Engineer will be proficient in all phases of delivery including concept, schematic, detailed design, and tender issue. In addition a broadly developed skill set including report writing, review and verification of others’ designs whilst also managing client relationships through the entire life cycle of a project(s); site experience an advantage. The Engineer will have extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of fire suppression system design, including different types of sprinkler systems (conventional, dry pipe systems, open deluge and pre-action), hydrants, hose reels, tank/pump sizing, alternatives such as gas suppression systems, oxygen reduction systems and water mist, foam, portable and specialist systems. A working knowledge of sustainability rating system requirements as it pertains to fire protection is an advantage. Responsibilities include; Gather and correlate basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures Work on detailed or routine fire engineering assignments involving calculations, sketches, diagrams, fire strategy drawings and fire strategy reports Propose an approach to solve new problems encountered Identify discrepancies in results Provide guidance to entry level graduate fire engineers Perform work in accordance with agreed budget and schedule with little supervision Contribute to the development of technical proposals Contribute to knowledge of the fire team, through giving talks or by other means Support project managers in the management of project costs, information and correspondence Liaison and coordination with all applicable Local Authority Departments to obtain approval on design projects. Minimum Requirements Requirements; A minimum of 10 years in mechanical engineering, with at least 5+ spent in the design of Fire protection. Understanding of International design standards Experience of applying fire engineering in the design of buildings Knowledge of the design codes for all main types of buildings, including offices, schools, hospitals, stations, airports and residential Excellent report-writing skills Advanced IT skills Experience in technical and client facing roles, managing and delivering projects and working as part of a larger team Familiarity with NFPA, British Standards as well as regional fire codes, a must. Person Specification; Good communication skills, and able to work well independently at times. Able to see the “bigger picture” and take a birds-eye view on projects Must be able to make decisions, act on own initiative and operate in a pro-active way. Confident, with the ability to work either independently or as part of a team. Ability to work to deadlines and under pressure. Maintains affiliation with professional societies to keep abreast of current technologies. Accountability for assigned work. Accuracy & precision of work. Willingness to learn and develop. Excellent written and verbal communication skills Strong problem solving skills Enthusiastic and Self-motivated. Work well within a multidisciplinary team. Preferred Qualifications A Bachelor of Science in either Mechanical Engineering or a related subject. Professional Engineer membership would be advantageous.
